Sandra Portocarrero

I'm a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Management Division at Columbia Business School and Incoming Assistant Professor of Management at the London School of Economics and Political Science

My research examines how people and organizations sustain or alleviate inequality. I employ qualitative research methods to understand the everyday work lives of minoritized workers and how people and organizations manage the inclusion of those who carry stigmatized social identities.

Using field methods such as in-depth interviews, surveys, and participant observation, I have conducted research with workers at the U.S. Department of State, and public and private universities in the United States and Latin America. In my work, I engage with and extend theories of relational expertise and status.

In my latest projects, I examine the economic and social life of undocumented entrepreneurs in California and of asylum seekers and refugees who become entrepreneurs in New York City. I strive to provide empirical, theoretical and applied insights into consequential diversity, equity, and inclusion related phenomena.

I completed my Ph.D. in Sociology at Columbia University. I hold a B.A. in Sociology (high honors) from the University of California, Berkeley.
